Karachi Stock Exchange is one of the biggest and most active exchange in the region. In 2003, it was declared as the “Best Performing Stock Market of the World for the year 2002”.
KSE has been well into the 4th year of being one of the Best Performing Markets of the world as declared by the international magazine “Business Week”. Similarly the US newspaper, USA Today, termed KSE as one of the best performing bourses in the world.
As on June 30, 2005, 659 companies were listed with the market capitalization of Rs. 2,068.19 billion (US $ 34.70) having listed capital of Rs. 438.49 billion (US $ 7.36 billion). The KSE 100 Index closed at 7450.12 on June 30, 2005.
KSE started with an index based on 50 shares. As the market grew a more comprehesive representative index was needed. On November 1, 1991 the KSE-100 was introduced and remains to this date the most generally accepted measure of the Exchange. The KSE-100 is a capital weighted index and consists of 100 companies representing about 88 percent of market capitalization of the Exchange.
In 1995, the KSE-100 was reconfirmed to provide the basis of index trading in future. The new KSE all share index was developed and introduced on September 18, 1995.
